Frankenstein - Gothic Elements

Frankenstein incorporates many elements of the gothic genre in order to enhance the horror story. I believe Mary Shelley knew her story would have a stronger mood and sense of setting if she were to use iconic staples to the horror/gothic genre.
An element that stands out within the reading is the isolation of the characters and the dark, depressive settings. Shelley incorporates scenes that use a subliminal nature so the monster appears more unorthodox. The scenes where he appears in a gothic setting provide a greater sense of dread for the reader and increases the perception of his looming presence and vengeful spirit.
The monster comes across as a more effective character when he appears in dark and gloomy settings. The monster is Victor’s tormenter and a demon to haunt him until he has his vengeance. The essence of this horror is only captured when the monster appears in the gothic nature.
