The Ocean at the End of the Lane: Reinventing Myths

The magical realism genre fits this story perfectly. Our narrator describes his childhood when he was a seven-year-old boy and tells of the magical elements set within an otherwise ordinary and logical narrative. There is a heavy theme of isolation, such as living out in the countryside and our protagonist being a little odd. Such themes make things like an animated circus tent that wants to give people money very believable. The noticeable contrast of the ridiculous with the ordinary makes the reader question whether their notion of normal is actually reality.
