The Leviathan trilogy is one of my absolute favorite series by Scott Westerfield. He offers his readers an incredible retelling of World War I: Clankers versus Darwinists (Beasts). The Clankers are technologists with walking tanks, zeppelins and airplanes, while the Darwinists have discovered ways to manipulate DNA and create biological hybrids such as floating whale ships, lizards that relay messages in English, jellyfish hot air balloons and elephantine beasts.
Scott made this world really convincing based off of his alternative version of WWI. The two main characters are fun and interesting, both having risky secrets. The story is always impactful due to how closely it relies on our history to tell such a compelling tale.
